Frequently asked questions
What should I do if I forget my password?
eDiary uses two separate passwords: the Local Password and the Cloud Service Password.
1. If you forget your Local Password:
- If you set a "Password Hint Question" when creating your diary, you can use it to retrieve your password.
- If no hint question was set, unfortunately, the password cannot be recovered.
- Note: If you have previously performed a cloud sync, you can re-download your diary content from the cloud to a new local file.
2. If you forget your Cloud Service Password:
- Open the eDiary PC or Mac software, open any diary, and click the "Account" icon in the top-left corner.
- In the cloud service login window, click "Forgot Password" and follow the on-screen instructions.
Important Warning: Due to eDiary's data encryption architecture, resetting your password will cause all your existing cloud data to become invalid. This invalid data will be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
Local data on your devices will not be affected. Please consider this consequence carefully before proceeding with a password reset.
How secure is the eDiary cloud service?
1. Inherited Robust Security Architecture
The security of eDiary Cloud Service is architected with the same rigor as our renowned local data protection. It inherits over 20 years of expertise in private data security to ensure your digital life remains strictly confidential.
2. Zero-Knowledge & End-to-End Encryption
eDiary uses "Zero-Knowledge" encryption model and End-to-End Encryption (E2EE). Your Cloud Service Password acts as the unique key to encrypt your data locally before it reaches the cloud. This means only you possess the "key" to your diary; no one, including the eDiary team or server administrators, can access or decrypt your content.
3. Resilience Against Breaches and Attacks
Even in the extreme event of a database breach, your privacy remains secure. We do not store your plain-text password on our servers, and all stored data is in ciphertext (encrypted form). Without your personal password, the data is computationally impossible to decrypt, rendering it useless to hackers.
Is there a size limit for local data files (.edf)?
Technically, the maximum capacity for an eDiary data file is 128 GB. However, for optimal performance and data safety, we strongly recommend keeping individual file sizes below 10 GB. Oversized files can significantly slow down backup processes and increase the risk of data corruption during synchronization. If your diary contains massive amounts of media, it is best practice to organize your entries into multiple files based on years or categories.
What is "Local Storage First"?
eDiary follows a "Local-First" principle. Your primary data is always stored on your own device. The cloud service acts as a backup and synchronization bridge. Even without an internet connection or if the cloud service is unavailable, you can still access and write in your diary normally.
Can I use my own storage (WebDAV)?
Yes. In addition to our official cloud, we offer Optional WebDAV Sync. This allows advanced users to sync data to their own private servers (like personal NAS), providing maximum control over data sovereignty.
